Moms, Dads, Grandmas & Grandpas, Oh My!

Spring is almost here and that means the time has come to find adorable yet meaningful gifts for the Moms, Dads, and grandparents in your life! Once your children have constructed the obligatory painted macaroni art or jewelry pieces and penned their handmade cards, it is time to consider gifts that provide the same level of sentiment with greater durability and usefulness.

Scrapbooks. These can be a wonderful way to follow your child from birth through all his major milestones. An expandable book will allow you to provide a single page, or a sheaf of them, for each year. The best part is that you can have your child help you design it to incorporate his personality on every page. Most big box retailers and office supply stores now offer a photo printing station which allows you to digitally edit your camera’s SD card or cell phone photos to create the most professional result. The down side of this idea is that by the time your little prince reaches adulthood Grandma and Grandpa may need a whole bookshelf just for the scrapbooks. Editorial decision-making is often required so that you don’t overwhelm your recipients.

Photo Pillows and Blankets. These can be just the best gift idea, especially if you have multiple children in the family! You can use digital photos of your whole family, or just the kids, and have them printed directly onto pillows, throws, and even mousepads and mugs! The “Collage” blanket is a great option if you want to do a special gift commemorating a family trip, or several stages of your child’s life in one item.  The throws can be had in anything from light but warm polar fleece to heavy woven, and can even include an embroidered message! Many of the blankets are so artful that people choose to display them with hanging rods on the wall like a painting.

Mothers’ Day is in May, Fathers’ Day in June, and Grandparents’ Day in September. You’d best get busy sorting through your photos!
